BOX OFFICE: Weekend Gives Us 'The Day the Earth Got Bored"

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

SEBRING, December 17, 2008 – Hollywood continues to falter and fail. But if you were looking to commit suicide the weekend of Dec. 12-14, you could have subjected yourself to the customer service at the Carmike or just watched The Day The Earth Stood Still and done yourself in with acute boredom and pseudo-apocalyptic special effects.

One thing got murdered for certain: your wallet. How much are movies these days and what do moviegoers get in return? In tough times, wise customers go for the biggest bang for the buck, and, in general, that’s not at theaters charging $8 and $9 to see a film and $12 or $13 for popcorn and a drink.

But we digress.

The Day The Earth Stood Still did finish as the box office champ with a $30.5 million take. The only other film to finish in double digits was Four Christmases with $13 million. Four Christmases plays at the Fairmount Cinema 6, where the excellent Christian film Fireproof is.

BOX OFFICE: 'Chihuahua' Guards Its Spot!

Monday, October 13th, 2008

DRIVE BY BARKING: This chihuahua seems to say, “Don’t mess with my No. 1 spot at the box office, or I’ll tinkle on your slippers!” Beverly Hills Chihuahua plays at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

SEBRING, October 13, 2008 – And you thought a chihuahua was a nervous little dog that could be scared off! Not at the box office.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua jealously, growlingly, held onto its No. 1 spot at the North American box office the weekend of Oct. 10-12, pulling in $17.5 million to fend off all the weekend’s newcomers. In two weeks, the film has grossed almost $53 million, a nice chunk for a release this time of year.

Sci fi/horror thriller Quarantine finished No. 2. It drew out teens and young adults in droves to its creepy, gory story and pulled in $14.2 million.

Spy game film Body of Lies, the Leonardo DiCaprio – Russell Crowe starrer, finished weaker than expected but still came in at No. 3 and pulled in $13.1 million. The story, acting, and point are excellent. We may not like Russell Crowe as a person, but he is the perfect chauvinistic manipulator in this film.

The other thought-provoking thriller, Eagle Eye, continues to do well. It finished at No. 4 with $11 million, dropping only 37% from week 2 or release to week 3.

All those films play locally at the Fairmount Cinema 6. No other film posted double digits.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist finished fifth with $6.5 million. Its per theater average was low, however. It plays at the Regal Eagle Ridge and the Carmike.

The excellent Christian film Fireproof continues to do well. It fell out of the top 10 to No. 11, grossing $3.2 million. Keep in mind, however, that it is only playing in 875 theaters nationwide. Its per theater average this past weekend was $3,645 – better than any film in the Top Ten except the top three and double that of Nights in Rodanthe, with Richard Gere and Diane Lane, which is playing at 2,575 theaters!

The other Christian film, Billy: the Early Years, the biopic of Billy Graham, did poorly. That may reflect Christians’ distrust of and disgustedness with Hollywood. Unlike Fireproof, Billy was not made by an independent, Christian company.

God bless, and see you at the movies!!!

Movie Recommendations for October 10th Weekend

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

SEBRING, October 12, 2008 – Here is a quick rundown of some of the best movies playing in the Heartland.

FIREPROOF – An outstanding Christian romance about a troubled marriage and what it will take to save it. Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea shine as the spouses bitterly disappointed and angry with each other. Fireproof plays exclusively at the Regal Eagle Ridge in Lake Wales. See our right hand column for a link to movie showtimes.

BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA – Top notch Walt Disney kids film featuring voiced-over real animals. It’s the No. 1 film in North America for a reason. Playing at the Fairmount Cinema 6 in Sebring.

EAGLE EYE – good, poignant film with Shia LeBeouf and Michelle Monaghan about our loss of privacy and how the safegaurds we put in place to protect our liberties sometimes betray them. Eagle Eye also stars Michael Chiklis and Billy Bob Thornton. Playing at the Fairmount Cinema 6 in Sebring.

BILLY: THE EARLY YEARS – People don’t usually go from sinner to saint in a snap of the fingers, not even big-time preachers. This film explores Billy Graham’s early life and influences and how they shaped what he became. Playing exclusively at the Carmike Cinema 8 in the Lakeshore Mall.

THE EXPRESS – It’s the story about how a football coach, a player, and a team defied the racial bigotry of the 50s. This movie is rated PG, so it’s family friendly, and a good history lesson. Plus it has exciting action. Playing at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

QUARANTINE – See the review in the previous article, but tis the season for horror movies, and Quarantine does it nicely. At the Fairmount.

BODY OF LIES – We’re all a little sensitive to spy films in the wake of 9/11, but Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe certainly provide star-studded reasons to take a gander at this one. At the Fairmount.

MOVIE REVIEW: Kung Fu Panda a Winner!

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Po, the Kung Fu Panda, voiced by Jack Black, gets a lift from Master Shifu, voiced by Dustin Hoffman.

SEBRING, June 7, 2008 – Finally, a good animated film has come back to Sebring! And the undisputed champion of fun and fight this weekend is Kung Fu Panda, a brilliantly animated comedy that will have both kids and parents laughing and bouncing in their seats.

The humor is clean and funny, and the animation is truly astonishing, with various 3D and 360 degree effects to amaze and delight. The voice-overs are all on the money, but it is the story that endears and teachers the most, and the use of Chinese-like wisdom phrases elevates the film (maybe the wisdom is Chinese, maybe it was written by a great cartoon movie writer to sound like the real things). And there are no slow parts to the movie, just a lot of good story, action, and funnies to keep you and the kiddies thoroughly involved, just like the kids in the matinee I attended. It’s that good.

Kung Fu Panda is rated PG because of the “martial arts” cartoon action. It’s playing at the Fairmount Cinema 6.
