BOX OFFICE: ‘District 9′ Alone at Top

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

SEBRING, August 18, 2009District 9, the sci-fi social commentary, rose like yeast to earn $37.4 million and the claim to No. 1 at the box office.

South African director Neil Blomkamp’s story of alien segregation and despair after their accidental arrival on earth dramatized South Africa’s tradition of apartheid. Blomkamp went further, twisting stories such as Black Like Me to create marvelous ironies and conflicts tin District 9 that evoked cries of sympathy from the audience at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

Despite the influences from history and drama, District 9 stands as one of the most creative science fiction films in years. Though it bears no resemblance to Star Trek, District 9 carries on that original series’s effort to flesh out our social conflicts within a science fiction setting.

With District 9, the Fairmount was able to execute a 1-2 punch on archrival Carmike, as G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, finished at No. 2 with 22.3 million. G.I. Joe did drop about 60%, and that’s steep, but typical of action films heavy on the teen demographic. In a manner similar to the latest Harry Potter, though, G.I. Joe’s opening was so strong that it is closing in on $100 million in earnings after only two weeks.

The Time Traveler’s Wife finished a strong third with $18.6 million in earnings. Rachel McAdams performs well and draws well, and Eric Bana completes the pairing, both developing an excellent chemistry with each other.

Overall, Box Office Mojo reported the North American box office rose 14% over last year.

Two Films Debut At Fairmount!

Friday, March 13th, 2009

SEBRING, March 13, 2009 – With the Carmike banking on the graphic sex and violence of Watchmen, the Fairmount Cinema 6 added two new movies to its lineup.

Already that lineup is strong. The Fairmount hosts the Oscar-winning best film Slumdog Millionaire, theĀ  No. 1 box office hit for two weeks, Madea Goes to Jail, the hugely popular Taken and Gran Torino (some folks have seen the latter 2 and 3 times, it’s that good).

Add to the mix The Last House on the Left, a horror remake that is not for the squeamish, and the Chinese-style fight movie, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li.

In short, there’s something for just about every taste at the Fairmount.

And the Fairmount gets our nod for the best popcorn and the best concession prices.

Wherever you go, whatever you see, have a great time at the movies!!!

MOVIE REVIEW: Same Ole Same Ole in 'Friday the 13th'

THEY AXED FOR IT: A bunch of doped up, sex-saturated collegians (teens?) run into master surgeon Jason in the remake of Friday the 13th.

SEBRING, Feb. 17, 2009 – One has to scratch one’s head at the remake of a 1980 film that has, by virtue of its sequels, been remade nine times already, not to mention a classic encounter with competing villain Freddy.

Oh, sure, the circumstances are different. The guy with the hockey mask who keeps the local cutlery store in business has been in summer camps, Manhattan, outer space, and even Hell. But his work and his ethos remain the same.

So Jason came to town again (at the Regal Eagle Ridge and at the Carmike) with a stale script and trademark moves and lured audiences back to the theater anyway. For those of us well-acquainted with the Friday the 13th series, however, there is just nothing new here, and the usual worn out pratfalls – walking into a stranger’s darkened house, flashlight battery failure, a “let’s get out of here” sentiment contravened by a “spirit of adventure”, and turnaround – he’s there, all conspired to give this movie the fascination of a used tire.

If you approach the Friday the 13th remake from a different, lighthearted angle, however, it can be enjoyed. Namely, you have to support Jason.

That’s what a friend and I did when we went to see the film, and my friend was particularly adept at squeezing the laughter out of this rehash with shouts of, “Get her, Jason!” and “Look under the dock!” The commentary and approach helped turned an otherwise boring retread of a movie into a humorous experience.

Pull for Jason. He’ll feel vindicated, and no one will want to make the same movie a gazillionth time.

Friday the 13th is rated R for sex, nudity, filthy language, and bloody, body rendering violence.

Our SEBRING CINEMA AND SPORTS rating on a scale of one to five reels, five being a classic:
