BOX OFFICE: 'Knowing,' 'Man,' Propel Fairmount to Top

knowing-01

PLANE PROPHECY: A commuter jet crashes before the runway at a Boston airport, just like a child’s numbered paper pulled from a time capsule said it would. It’s part of the creepiness of Knowing, the No. 1 film in the nation, which plays exclusively at the Fairmount Cinema 6 in Sebring.

SEBRING, March 22, 2009 – The Fairmount’s run at the top as Highlands County’s most popular movie theater continues, if the national box office is the measuring stick.

The top two movies at the box office for the weekend of March 20-22 both played at the Fairmount Cinema 6: Knowing and I Love You, Man. The former was king with projected earnings of $24.8 million, while the latter was No. 2 with earnings of $18 million.

No. 3 was Duplicity, with $14.4 million. The only other film that grossed in double digits was Race to Witch Mountain, which earned $13 million.

Watchmen continues its plummet toward watchlessness. This perverse film that features male frontal nudity lost another 64 % in ticket sales. One hundred theaters dumped the bomb in just its third week. It continues to play at the Carmike.

Every movie at the Fairmount placed in the Top Ten except for Doubt, which was released last year and has just come to Highlands County. It is an excellently acted film worthy of your viewing. It stars Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams.

Sebring Falls to Lake Wales; Crowd Disappoints

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

SEBRING, March 19, 2009 – The varsity Lady Blue Streaks hung in with the state’s best team for three innings before too many errors dictated a 7-0 Lake Wales victory in softball.

Sebring trailed only 1-0 after three (that lead coming on two errors), but two critical errors in the 4th gave the Lady Highlanders what turned into an insurmountable  5-0 lead.

Dino Lower and Hannah Shoop swatted hits in the first two innings, and Karrie Dudek laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt as Sebring challenged early.

But their bats would go silent until the 6th inning, when Lower would again drive a hit at third base, and Haley Pack followed later with a single. However, Lower, a freshman, was thrown out at third when she overran it.

Still, considering the Lady Streaks are riddled with season-ending injuries to four starters, they performed admirably. If they can improve their fielding, they’ll be able to hang with the Lake Waleses.

Understandably, that was little consolation to Head Coach Joe Sinness, who has had to deal with a plethora of challenges daunting to any first year coach.

“It showed in the warmups. If you’re casual picking up balls and making tags in warmups, you’ll do it in games,” he said. As for the injuries, “I feel like there’s a black cloud following me around. I’m surprised it didn’t rain tonight.”

Sebring drops to 9-4 on the season, while Lake Wales improves to 13-0.

Despite the margin, Sinness felt pitcher Kayla Clemens acquitted herself well – and she did, unofficially allowing only five hits on the night. Most of the Highlander runs were unearned.

Sebring may get another crack at the Lady Highlanders in either a tournament or post-season play.

The JV Lady Streaks also fell, 14-3, for much the same reason – errors that can be eliminated by more focused and developed play. The JVers gave up 7 runs on 8 errors in the second inning, for instance.

A bigger disappointment was the Sebring crowd. Many failed to turn out for the game, especially students. Many of those that did were quiet. More Lake Wales fans attended and they were more vocal. Who knows what the “third man” might have accomplished with a good, vocal showing.

More Adversity For Lady Streaks

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

SEBRING, March 18, 2009 – In a season already stamped with an unbelievable number of injuries to starters, the Sebring Lady Blue Streaks appear to have suffered yet another setback.

Unconfirmed reports indicate pitcher/fielder Kaitlyn Ostrander, a sophomore, is out for the rest of the season with an arm/shoulder injury.

The reports could not have come at a more inopportune moment. Sebring prepares to clash with the Lake Wales Lady Highlanders Thursday at 7:30 at Lady Blue Streak Field behind the high school. Lake Wales is the 2007 state 4A softball champion and a regional semifinalist last year. They were derailed by enventual state champion Naples, 4-2.

Ostrander is the fourth veteran starter the Lady Streaks have lost this year. Already senior standouts Nikki Helms and Sami Lower are out with season-ending muscle tears. Sophomore standout Amanda Grimaldo was lost for the season before it began. Now Ostrander’s injury adds to the list.

On top of which freshman pitching/fielding standout Haley Pack has been nagged – and sidelined – with foot problems. She did not make an appearance in Monday’s game versus DeSoto and may not be available for Thursday’s clash with Lake Wales.

That leaves only one proven pitcher on the varsity roster – Kayla Clemens. Clemens pitched a beautiful game for Sebring in its 7-2 win over DeSoto.

It was unclear whether varsity Head Coach Joe Sinness would elevate any more players from the junior varsity roster. He had made freshmen Pack and Dino Lower varsity players from the season’s outset, and last Friday he called up Jamie Faircloth to play infield. He might look to slugger Michelle Bash or sophomore Carlee Hill, or perhaps yet another player, to provide the varsity with some  backup.

Drama Fuels Sebring Softball Wins

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

SEBRING, March 17, 2009 – With critical injuries to key players, one might have thought the varsity Sebring Lady Blue Streaks were down for the count. Monday night’s victories proved the fires still burn brightly.

The varsity Lady Streaks took command in the first inning and never let go, earning a 7-2 win over a tough district oppoent, the DeSoto Lady Bulldogs.

DeSoto came to town with a 5-1 district record, their only loss a close one to district leader Braden River. What they found was a team ready to fight.

Senior Lady Streak Kayla Clemens pitched a brilliant game, firing 12 strikeouts with a variety of pitches that muzzled the Bulldog attack until the last inning, when it squeaked out two runs.

Clemens also went 2 for 4 at the plate and got on base every at bat. She scored once and would have scored a second, but Head Coach Joe Sinness pinch ran Jamie Faircloth for her in the 6th, and Faircloth scored Sebring’s final run as she made her varsity debut.

Catcher Wendy Negrin had another outstanding evening, going 3 for 4 and driving in three runs while keeping most Lady Bulldog runners throttled all evening. She has become the mistress of the hit down the third baseline, rockets that drop into left field just inside fair territory. But Negrin also ripped one over second base and into center field, which allowed Fairlcoth to score.

Mostly though, it was the team effort, led by the captaincies of Negrin and Karrie Dudek. With starters Sami Lower, Nikki Helms, and Amanda Grimaldo apparently all out for the season – devastating losses, and freshman starter Haley Pack sidelined with foot problems, the Lady Streaks went to the well and found heart.

Jamie Hershkowitz, Hannah Shoop, Dino Lower, Pookie Adams, and Camille White contributed with their bats. White laid down a beautiful second-inning bunt that created confusion among the Bulldogs and allowed Shoop to score Sebring’s first run.

And their gloves were nearly golden, with – unofficially – only two errors on the night.

The solidarity comes at just the right time: the Lake Wales Lady Highlanders visit town Thursday night. They bring Hannah Rogers, one of the state’s most highly regarded pitchers, and a team that won the 4A state softball championship in 2007 and that was a regional semifinalist last year, upended only by the eventual state champion, Naples, 4-2.

The Junior Varsity game was high drama, a four-inning thriller that Sebring led after the 1st until the end of the top of the 4th, when the JV Lady Bulldogs took an 8-7 lead.

After the first Lady Streak batter struck out in the bottom of the 4th, Brittany Lockhart took base on a walk. She promptly stole second.

Lauren Welborn came to the plate and ripped a double to score Lockhart and knot the game at 8. Meri Littlefield got caught at first on a fielder’s choice, but Welborn advanced to third. On a wild pitch, Welborn motored home in high gear and won the game!

It was a choice ending, but all the players contributed with their bats and gloves, with perhaps special notice to Michelle Bash, for her fielding and leadership, and Laura Tenneson, who belted a first-inning triple that scored two runs.

Like their varsity brethren, the JV Lady Streaks have a tall order against the JV Lady Highlanders, but they are looking more and more like they are up to the task!

BOX OFFICE: Can You Smell What 'The Rock' Cooked?

Monday, March 16th, 2009

SEBRING, March 16, 2009 – Once he was the biggest name in pro wrestling. And he began his career on a musclebound, action note.

Since his thespian infancy, however, Dwayne Johnson, affectoinately known as ‘The Rock,” has enjoyed more success in kid flicks. That’s not bad, though I hope to see him resurrect his action hero career (did he move over to make room for John Cena?). After all, his latest venture, Race to Witch Mountain, is the No. 1 film at the box office.

Race to Witch Mountain cashed in an even $25 million the weekend of March 13-15 to lead a modest pack of films. Watchmen very much appears to be getting nuked at the box office. Its revenues fell 67.3 % to just over $18 million. Horror thriller Last House on the Left finished at No. 3 with $14.66 million.

However, Last House on the Left finished second in per theater average, above Watchmen and just behind Race to Witch Mountain.

That says much about Watchmen’s fall from moviegoer grace.

Taken continues its strong, consistent run, scoring $6.65 million for the weekend, while Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail rounded out the Top Five with $5.13 million.

Once again in Highlands County, the Fairmount Cinema 6 hosted 3 of the Top 5 films, and 4 of the top 6 if one includes the No. 6 film, Oscar-winner Slumdog Millionaire.

REVIEW: 'Last House' Full Of Fear, Suspense

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

lasthouseontheleft-01GETTING TO THE POINT: Emma Collingwood (Monica Potter) and surgeon-husband John cook up retaliation in Last House on the Left, which plays at the Fairmount.

Special Note: Some movie listings do not display the start times for Last House on the Left. It IS playing at the Fairmount Cinema 6. Start times are as follows: (2:00), (4:30), 7:00, and 9:30. Parentheses indicate matinees.

SEBRING, March 15, 2009 – Remakes can be tricky and unfulfilling. Just ask the remakers of Friday the 13th, whose film fell into the sea of disfavor and promptly sunk into oblivion after one good weekend at the box office.

The fate of Last House on the Left is open. Box office estimates are promising that it will finish a strong third behind Race to Witch Mountain and Watchmen (another dead lead weight that is losing about 70 percent of its first week take). Whether it can hold up on its own is a question audiences will have to answer.

What we can say is that Last House on the Left is one heck of a taut, suspenseful, scary film.

The plot is simple. A band of thugs kidnaps two sweet teens and brutalizes them near a woodland retreat. One escapes – back to her mom and dad at their lakeside vacation home. Under immense pressure, the parents plot their revenge and the way to save their daughter’s life.

What happens next will have you on the edge of your seat. But BEWARE: Last House on the Left contains a realistic, graphic scene of a rape that is the most intense I have ever seen. I cringed and stopped looking at times, but it was the audio that was particularly disturbing, as Director Dennis Iliadis and actress Sara Paxton combined to deliver a gut-wrenching performance.

DO NOT GO IF YOU CANNOT TAKE IT!

This scene is not for pre- or early teens or older generation viewers unaccustomed to cinematic realism. It may not be suitable even for older teens and others whose keen sensitivities are easily pricked.

Moreover, the acting is convincing acroos the board, with veterans Tony Goldwyn (The Last Samurai, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Ghost) and Monica Potter (Along Came a Spider, Boston Legal, Saw, Patch Adams) leading a cast of strong performers.

Last House on the Left plays exclusively in Highlands County at the Fairmount Cinema 6. It is rated R for graphic violence and bloodletting, some nudity, and bad language.

Our Sebring Cinema and Sports rating for those with tough guts (on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being a classic):

Night Of Woe In Baseball, Softball

Friday, March 13th, 2009

img_0758-b1

I’M GOING HOME: Josh Acevedo scores in the third inning on a Cody Hoffner sacrifice fly, but the Streaks fell to Braden River Friday night, 13-3, in six innings. They weren’t alone. All Streak JV and varsity baseball and softball teams lost.

PHOTO BY SEBRING CINEMA AND SPORTS

SEBRING, March 13, 2009 – It was a beautiful night for  baseball at Firemen’s Memorial Field. The smell of oranges wafted through the air on the spring breezes of a temperate March night.

But what wasn’t beautiful were the results of Sebring efforts in baseball and softball. Sebring’s varsity and junior varsity squads in those sports fell victim to the same villain – Braden River – in games played at home and away.

The JV baseballers fell to the Pirates, 6-3, at Braden River. The JV softballers fell at the same location, 12-0, to the Lady Pirates. The varsity softballers lost, 9-1, and the varsity baseballers lost, 13-3 in six innings, both to their Pirate counterparts.

And injuries are spooking the varsity Lady Blue Streaks, who have already lost two starters to ACL tears, most recently Sami Lower.

Pitching ace Nikki Helms was lifted in the third inning after suffering what seems to be a pulled hamstring. Haley Pack replaced her but was in turn pulled when she suffered what might be a foot sprain. Kayla Clemons finished on the mound for the Lady Streaks.

The toughest loss may have been the at-home humbling endured by the varsity boys baseball team. They gave up six runs in the first inning and, despite three pitchers, could not stop the hemorrhaging throughout the game. Although Braden River made some good hits, they also benefitted from a plethora of Streak errors and late, inaccurate throws.

On the positive side, Jesse Baker slammed a home run in the second inning, Josh Acevedo scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Hoffner in the third inning, and Kevin Welborn electrified the crowd when he beat a throw to first, and later scored  after some nifty base thievery, all in the fifth.

On his hit, Welborn bunted to Pirate pitcher Marc Monroe, who had trouble getting up on the ball and making his turn to throw to first. Pirate Michael Petrilla was off base when Monroe made his throw, and Welborn ducked to the outside of the basepath line, under Monroe’s tag, stretching out his left hand to touch first base.

Welborn’s was a brilliant move and, along with Baker’s shot,  one of the few Streak highlights of an otherwise dismal night.

Streaks and Lady Streaks will have to reload and come out firing.

GO STREAKS!

Two Films Debut At Fairmount!

Friday, March 13th, 2009

SEBRING, March 13, 2009 – With the Carmike banking on the graphic sex and violence of Watchmen, the Fairmount Cinema 6 added two new movies to its lineup.

Already that lineup is strong. The Fairmount hosts the Oscar-winning best film Slumdog Millionaire, the  No. 1 box office hit for two weeks, Madea Goes to Jail, the hugely popular Taken and Gran Torino (some folks have seen the latter 2 and 3 times, it’s that good).

Add to the mix The Last House on the Left, a horror remake that is not for the squeamish, and the Chinese-style fight movie, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li.

In short, there’s something for just about every taste at the Fairmount.

And the Fairmount gets our nod for the best popcorn and the best concession prices.

Wherever you go, whatever you see, have a great time at the movies!!!

MOVIE REVIEW: Who Watches the 'Watchmen': Suckers

Friday, March 13th, 2009

watchmen-01

SEBRING, March 13, 2009 – This film – Watchmen – about the inherent monstrousness of man is itself a monstrosity, a bloated, pompous, dark farce flowing over with graphic murders, sex, and nudity.

If you like all that wrapped around themes borrowed from other films and TV, most notably the “Architects of Fear” Outer Limits episode, to which the film gives a nod, but done with less sobriety, then Watchmen could be for you.

It wasn’t for me.

Watchmen isn’t about character; it’s about chaos, albeit a controlled chaos, savage man trying to survive and salvage, in a farcical way, some “human dignity” against the push and pull of his own savagery and sensuality. In that sense, it’s quite bleak. The superheros are superheros only in the sense that they have abilities beyond the norm. Their natures are no different than the average human’s.

And amid their baseness they face the possibility of a nuclear war (in the film’s alternate 1985 reality that features parodies of Nixon, Kissinger, and newsman Ted Koppel) that will end all life on earth. It is never clear why nuclear war is imminent, only that the Russians under communism fear America’s Dr. Manhattan, a nuclear scientist caught in a cell mutating energy accident who becomes the ultimate detached scientist, a translucent blue being who kills in one moment and says he wants to create life in the next.

But Dr. Manhattan can serve as a symbol for the Watchmen’s whole outlook – soulless.

The use of overlapping time scenes won’t make the moviegoer feel any more comfortable either. Viewers may feel one monent that they are in the 1940s or 50s, the next moment in the 1970s, the next something on the fringes of Blade Runner. It’s weird.

The only likeable character is Rorschach and, well, the film isn’t very kind to him.

If you have three hours of your life to fritter away, you may want to watch Watchmen. But it would make more sense to play a few hands of cards, quilt, or fix that kitchen cabinet door.

Watchmen plays at the Regal Eagle Ridge and the Carmike. It’s rated R for strong and graphic sex and violence (I cannot emphasize that enough), frontal nudity, and filthy language.

My friend, Kenny Rodriguez, 20, also saw the film, at IMAX in Orlando, and said, “It stunk.” And he’s a member of the film’s demographic target. He did like Rorschach, however.

Our Sebring Cinema and Sports rating, 1 to 5 reels, 5 being the best:
