District 9 01 B

SHOW ME YOUR GREEN, SCALY CARD: Human authorities approach a refugee from another planet in the sci-fi/fantasy film District 9.

SEBRING, August 14, 2009 – It’s Friday and time for local theaters to reload their auditoriums.

District 9 opens at the Fairmount Cinema 6. Despite fielding no stars and rookie feature-length director Neill Blomkamp, both critics and Yahoo! users have, in a rare agreement, given District 9, a sci-fi/fantasy film, an A, with critics coming in at an A-.

Blomkamp’s prior work included a stint as the visual arts director for TV’s Smallville.

The Time Traveler’s Wife and Bandslam open at the Regal Eagle Ridge and the Carmike.

The Time Travler’s Wife stars Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams and a fantastical premise that Bana’s character is genetically disposed, or indisposed, as the case may be, to spontaneously travel through time, thus disturbing their romance.

Fans may remember McAdams from The Notebook and Red Eye, as well as Bana from The Hulk and The Other Boleyn Girl.

Bandslam is a musical comedy that will appeal mostly to teenagers interested in a musical battle between boys spurred on by a spurned girl.

Going into the weekend, G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, was the nation’s No. 1 film. G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra continued to do well through the week. For instance, it earned $4.8 million on Wednesday, nearly twice as much as its closest competitor, Julie and Julia. G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra plays at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

BOX OFFICE: ‘G-Force’ Smacks ‘Potter’

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

All the black magic in the world could not keep Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at the top of the box office a second week.

A little furry feature called G-Force knocked Potter from his perch. The 3D G-Force amassed $31.7 million in ticket sales. Potter nosedived by 62% to finish with almost $29.5 million.

The Ugly Truth, with Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl, finished close behind at No. 3 with $27.6 million. Scary Orphan came in at $12.4 million and fourth place (see our movie review below).

The news gets worse for Potter: Its per theater average was less than both G-Force and The Ugly Truth.

The flip side is that despite that calamitous fall, Potter did so well in its opening days that it has grossed over $200 million domestically and more than $400 million overseas. Potter cost a monstrous $250 million to make.

What does it all mean? The Half Blood Prince is the last Potter film reportedly, so people went to see it, but it’s not very good.

NEW MOVIES: It's Jumpin' At The Fairmount!!!

Friday, April 10th, 2009

SEBRING, April 10, 2009 – The Fairmount continues to break new ground, grabbing a fistful of cinema’s top films when they are released.

With the No. 1 film in North America – Fast & Furious – already there, Hannah Montana: The Movie, the R-rated comedy Observe and Report, and Dragonball: Evolution all debut at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

Nothing new opens at the Carmike, but the theater does offer Watchmen, The Haunting in Connecticut, and other films, even as pedestrian traffic seems to be diminishing at the once-busy mall.

Hannah Montana and Dragonball give the Fairmount a powerful kids lineup, adding to the young adult, middle-aged, and senior viewers they have been luring to qulity films such as Taken, Doubt, and Fast & Furious.

Wherever you go and whatever you see, have a great time at the movies this weekend, and a blessed Christian Passover!

BOX OFFICE: People Watching the Watchmen

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

SEBRING, March 10, 2009 – With tons of promotion, much like Friday the 13th, Watchmen took over the box office with $55 million +. It averaged a strong $15,000 plus per theater.

Will it last? That is the quesiton that next weekend must answer. Yahoo! user ratings, initially high for the adaptation of the DC graphic novel, plummeted a whole grade, from A- to B-. That’s not a good sign. It is an indicator that the film may not have the mainstream appeal for which the producers had hoped. Again, only time will tell.

No other film finished with double digits. The Fairmount Cinema 6 continued to dominate, offering three of the top five films on its screens: Madea Goes To Jail, Taken, and Slumdog Millionaire.

MOVIE REVIEW: 'Taken' = Don't Mess With Daddy

DADDY’S HOME!: And that ain’t good for the bad guys in the hit movie, Taken, starring Liam Neeson as an angry CIA dad who goes after the slave traders who kidnapped his daughter.

SEBRING, Feb. 12, 2009 – Don’t mess with Daddy. That’s the terrifying truth Taken brings to the big screen at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

And as a member of the Tough Dads Club, I cheer that!

Tall, rugged Liam Neeson plays Daddy, a semi-retired CIA agent who goes after his daughter’s kidnapers.

We all identify with Dad. And we are vicariously right in the thick of things as Neeson executes judgment on the heathen Albanians who prey on and market young women to the bizarre or excessive sexual predilections of a super-rich clientele of scumbags.

It’s an action-packed emotional romp through the sordid world of flesh-peddling – a real problem that gets too little attention. Fortunately for our catharsis, someone terribly well- equipped is able to embark on the eradication of the filth.

Unleash your emotions with Taken. It will be a satisfying experience.

Playing exclusively at The Fairmount Cinema 6

BOX OFFICE: Top Movies at the Fairmount

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

SEBRING, February 11, 2009 - He’s Just Not That Into You and Taken ruled the roost atop the North American box office the weekend of Feb. 6-8, giving the Fairmount Cinema 6 a crushing advantage over the other county theater, the Carmike.

He’s Just Not That Into You grossed $27.8 million to finish first and usurp Taken’s No. 1 spot, but the Liam Neeson actioner about a dad with deadly skills going after his daughter’s abductors dropped a ridiculously low 16.9 % from its debut to its second week. Taken grossed $20.5 million to grab that No. 2 spot.

Together, He’s Just Not That Into You and Taken grossed $10 million more than the next three movies combined, an early indication that they are resonating with audiences. The Pink Panther 2, on the other hand, debuted weakly, having lost its native attraction to sophisticated viewers. It now panders to a narrower range of children with its excessive use of predictable pratfalls.

By its dollar votes, the viewing public  heartily recommends Taken and He’s Just Not That Into You.

Brewster's To Re-Open Friday

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

SEBRING, Feb. 5, 2009 - Highlands County’s top coffee house, Brewster’s, was set to re-open Friday morning, owners Bruce and Joy Rogers said today.

Brewster’s has moved to 2191 U.S. Hwy. 27 North, Sebring, a block north of where they were at the corner of Thunderbird Road and 27.

Brewster’s is at the end of the Central Plaza, right across from Burger King, and next to CardSmart, Domino’s Pizza, and Scoop’s Ice Cream. The new site features an expanded, free wireless Internet connectivity; hot, cold, and frozen Crimson Cup coffees, teas, and smoothies; a relaxing, congenial ambience; game tables; more space; and more parking; as well as a drive-thru window.

And – led by Bruce and Joy – the same friendly crew of Dave, Tina, Kenny, Denise, and Ashley will provide attentive service and conversation.

Brewster’s hours on Friday are 6:30 a.m. to 5:30, 8 a.m. to 6 on Sunday, and 6:30 a.m. to 11 Monday through Thursday. The business phone number is 314-8890.

The Rogerses had hoped to re-open last Sunday, but some remodeling delayed that.

“We feel blessed to be where we are,” Rogers said. “Many, many people – our customers, whom we consider friends – have stepped up as a community to help us move and redo the interior. It’s been an amazing effort that we could not have done had we been strictly a business.”

He wasn’t kidding. One customer, named Kris, helped to paint. Another, also named Bruce, was working on fittings. Tony and Kathleen were cleaning up Friday while  Tim helped wash dishes.

“This place is more than just a coffee shop,” Tim offered. “It’s a gathering place, a second home for a lot of us. We haven’t had our second home for a week now. We’re ready to come back!”

He’s not exaggerating. People from all walks of life congregate at Brewster’s. The Baby Club meets there. A group of writers continues to meet there, as does the exotic Society for Creative Anachronism. Bible groups from several churches, including the Adventist, Grace Bible, and Highlands Community Church, study there. Many individuals come, too, to read or to use the free Internet.

And on what should be an unusually cold Friday morning, the Rogerses expect that a lot of people will be ready to come back to Brewster’s for some steaming hot coffee!

BOX OFFICE: Fairmount Grabs Top Spots

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

SEBRING, February 5, 2009 – Three of the top five grossing movies for the weekend of Jan. 30 – Feb. 1 played at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

Taken, starring Liam Neeson as a deadly CIA agent whose daughter has been kidnapped during a European trip, took top honors with a $24 + million haul. It also sported a solid $7,800 per theater average, tops in the Top Ten. This exciting action film plays at the Fairmount.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop, finished at No. 2 after two weeks at No. 1. It plays at the Regal Eagle Ridge and at the Carmike.

Scare flick The Uninvited hauled in $10,3 million to register as the only other movie in double digits for the Super Bowl weekend. It also plays at the Fairmount.

Hotel for Dogs and Clint Eastwood’s smart, emotional film of atonement, Gran Torino, rounded out the top five. Hotel for Dogs plays at the Regal Eagle Ridge and Gran Torino at the Fairmount.

We give high marks for Gran Torino, a film for which both young and old have left the theater with a favorable impression.

BOX OFFICE: "Mall Cop" Tops; "Underworld" 2nd

TAKING AIM: Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) asserts his property rights in a decrepit Detroit neighborhood in Gran Torino, which plays exclusively at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

SEBRING, January 26, 2009 – Funnyman Kevin James kept them laughing as his Paul Blart: Mall Cop topped the box office for the second week in a row with $21.5 million.

Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans finished a close second with $20.7 million. That’s quite a feat for the third installment of the series (and a prequel at that) that starred Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman, neither of whom was in this one.

That’s because the gloomy gothic setting, terrific action, and actors Michael Sheen, Rhona Mitra, and Bill Nighy fleshed out an inter-species Romeo and Juliet story rife with civil rights overtones.

Gran Torino rounded out the top three with $16 million. Clint Eastwood’s portrayal of gritty, guilt-ridden Walt Kowalski living in a rapidly deteriorating, ethnically changing neighborhood keeps drawing in fans. Of all the existing Top Ten films that did not add theaters, Gran Torino dropped the least from last week: 27.2%.

Be on the look0ut: Four new movies open this Friday, all at the Fairmount Cinema 6.
