Invention of Lying B

SEBRING, October 16, 2009 – The Fairmount Cinema 6 continues to rock Sebring with a host of hot movies.

And not only the movies, but the stars you love are there!

Bruce Willis stars in the Surrogates, which plays exclusively in Highlands County at the Fairmount. Surrogates mixes The Matrix with murder and mystery to give audiences one of the most compelling films of the fall.

Academy-award winner Ellen Page stars in Whip It, a fempower, Roller Derby rock ‘em sock ‘em.

And big-time actors Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner bring the laughs and the love in The Invention of Lying (see photo above courtesy of Warner Bros.).

Woody Harrelson is killing the undead and killing audiences with laughs in the wacky Zombieland.

Pandorum and Capitalism: A Love Story round out the offerings.

We apologize as recent events and technical difficulties have precluded a timely update of our site. We are back at full strength and refocused  only on movies. As soon as one or two more technical glitches are resolved, we will update our ads section.

We bemoan the state of affairs at the mall, where teen and young adult mischief continue to plague shoppers and moviegoers alike. Safety remains a concern there, where threats, real and perceived, harangue patrons. We can only hope that that dire situation can be remedied, unless the mall and the Carmike Cinema alike become nothing more than a giant indoor ghost town.

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

SEBRING, July 2, 2009 – Sebring and Okeechobbe will finally get it on, if the weather accommodates them.

Tournament officials have rescheduled the twice delayed  Dixie Boys Championship Game to Friday at 7 p.m. at the Max Long Complex in Sebring.

But they have a Plan B, too. If it rains enough – again – tournament officials would move the championship game to the baseball fields in Avon Park located behind the Clock Restaurant.

Keep coming back to SEBRING CINEMA AND SPORTS for updates on the time and day of the chammpionship game.

MOVIE REVIEW: Realistic ‘Pelham’ Unnerves

CALLING THE SHOTS: Ryder (John Travolta) tells the boys on the other end how it is going to be in the hostage action-drama The Taking of Pelham 123, playing at the Fairmount Cinema Square in Sebring.

SEBRING, June 18, 2009 – Just another day becomes a city under siege that tests the moral fiber of a shady transit official in The Taking of Pelham 123.

Denzel Washington plays Walter Garber, an innocuous official who has risen through the ranks by putting his nose to the grindstone. John Travolta is Ryder, the self-loving, remorseless, concupiscent kidnapper hell-bent on getting everything he wants at any cost. They meet on the fateful day Ryder decides to take over a subway car.

The result is The TAking of Pelham 123’s taut, gut-wrenching suspense that, despite some flaws, will keep you riveted to your seats.

Washington’s portrayal of Garber, a type of Everyman, is on the money. Travolta’s Ryder is Jokeresque, irrevocably resolute in the pursuit of his insane yet ingenious goal. The supporting cast is solid, if unspectacular.

The detriments to the film are few: the jittery, stuttering cinenmatography, the uneven music, and the reality that America is more concerned about Islamic terrorism.

Our sense is that the cinematography should have been more character-focused and withy views from their perspective rather than the blurry action of an observer’s perspective, as if we were witnessing it. There was too strong an identification with Washington’s Garber character.

Nonetheless, the remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 is a nod to President Obama’s fight against greed and a nod to the ever-invasive effects, albeit salutary at times, of technology.

The Taking of Pelham 123 is rated R for language and violence, and it plays at the Fairmount Cinema 6.

Our Rating, 1 to 5 reels, 5 being a classic:

BOX OFFICE: 'Knowing,' 'Man,' Propel Fairmount to Top

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

knowing-01

PLANE PROPHECY: A commuter jet crashes before the runway at a Boston airport, just like a child’s numbered paper pulled from a time capsule said it would. It’s part of the creepiness of Knowing, the No. 1 film in the nation, which plays exclusively at the Fairmount Cinema 6 in Sebring.

SEBRING, March 22, 2009 – The Fairmount’s run at the top as Highlands County’s most popular movie theater continues, if the national box office is the measuring stick.

The top two movies at the box office for the weekend of March 20-22 both played at the Fairmount Cinema 6: Knowing and I Love You, Man. The former was king with projected earnings of $24.8 million, while the latter was No. 2 with earnings of $18 million.

No. 3 was Duplicity, with $14.4 million. The only other film that grossed in double digits was Race to Witch Mountain, which earned $13 million.

Watchmen continues its plummet toward watchlessness. This perverse film that features male frontal nudity lost another 64 % in ticket sales. One hundred theaters dumped the bomb in just its third week. It continues to play at the Carmike.

Every movie at the Fairmount placed in the Top Ten except for Doubt, which was released last year and has just come to Highlands County. It is an excellently acted film worthy of your viewing. It stars Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams.

Defense-minded Streaks Fall To Highlanders

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

LAKE WALES, Feb. 24, 2009 – It might not seem like much, but Lake Wales is at a higher altitude than Sebring. So it gets these shifting winds out of the northeast and the northwest that swim and swirl and make a cold night seem much colder.

It was more than the cold which froze the bats of the Lady Blue Streak varsity softball team Tuesday night. A first-class pitcher named Hannah Rogers iced them with a mixture of speed and finesse.

The result was a 5-0 loss for the Lady Streaks. Rogers fanned 11 batters, and the Streaks could manage only one hit the entire, chilly evening – a fourth inning single to center field by senior Sami Lower.

In the only moment of offensive excitement for the Streaks, Sami deftly eluded a tag by Lady Highlander Ashley King while running to second base on a sacrifice by Pookie Adams. The video is below, after which the story continues.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YRk5H5_07A]

The breach in the Lake Wales defense closed when the next Sebring batter struck out to end the top of the fourth.

Still, Sebring had a good night defensively from the Lower sisters, Dino and Sami, Pookie Adams, Hannah Shoop, and the rest of the squad.

Freshman Haley Pack made her second start – and against arguably the strongest team Sebring will face during the regular season – and gave up only six hits. Unofficially, she gave up four walks and pitched two strikeouts.

But with their speed, the Lady Highlanders were able to milk those hits and walks for everything they were worth, notching runs one-by-one to build a lead that became insurmountable in the face of Rogers’s excellent pitching.

Pack talked afterward about the game in the video below. After the video, the story continues:

Sebring will get another shot at the Lady Highlanders when they visit the Streaks March 19.

The JVers also lost to Lake Wales by a 19-7 tally, but the defensive play showed marked improvement.

Below, first basewoman Michelle Bash slides home safely for Sebring.

Sebring Falls In Regionals

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Technical difficulties prevented the timely completion of this story. We apologize. New material is available below, including one or more videos. Thank you.

SEBRING, Feb. 19, 2009 – It looked like another comeback. The Blue Streaks basketball team had trailed most of the game, in their own gym, to a Lakeland Kathleen team decimated by misconduct suspensions and sustained by an influx of JV players.

The Blue Streaks waited until the fourth quarter this time to unleash what appeared to be a game-winning onslaught. And with just over a minute, Sebring held a tenuous 53-50 lead.

It was a minute too much.

The Streaks missed the front end of three consecutive one-and-one free throws tat could have put the game away, and they could not stop a desperate Kathleen on the defensive end. The result was missed opportunities and an all-too-quick turnaround, with the Streaks falling behind, 57-53.

Still, with 13 seconds left, the Blue Streaks had a chance. Here’s how that chance played out:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csYkBMx65zQ]

And so Sebring bowed out of the 2009 season. Jake Trussell finished as the high scorer for the Streaks with 12. J.C. Howard, Joe Young, and Tevin Toney each contributed 8.

BOX OFFICE: 'Twilight' Takes Bite Out Of 'Quantum'

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

SEBRING, November 25, 2008 – There might be more action in Quantum of Solace than any Bond film ever, but Twilight swept away all the action and took a huge bite out of Quantum’s revenues the weekend of Nov. 21-23.

Twilight finished as the No. 1 film in the land with a $69.6 million haul. What remains to be seen is if this contemporary vampire flick has staying power during the holiday season.

Quantum of Solace fell an astonishing 60.4 % with revenues of $26.7 million. That was good enough to keep it in the No. 2 position. Reviews of the film have been above average to good but not overwhelming as they were for Daniel Craig’s first shot at the role.

Bolt finished in 3rd with $26.2 million and, though the trailers looked good, it appears to be another underperforming 3D film. It does not show any signs of being a blockbuster.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa pulled in more than $15 million, but it, too, is underperforming, having cumed about $137 million. It should exceed its $150 million production cost, and worldwide revenues will give it a boost, too, but moviegoers may be displeased with a lack of holiday themed movies during the holidays.

We’ll see how that possible explanation pans out with results from next weekend, after Four Chistmases debuts at the Fairmount Cinema Square.

Fireproof has come to the Fairmount as well, and we encourage moviegoers, particularly Christians, to see this terrific film.

Players Humble Coaches At Thunder Games!

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

SEBRING, October 28, 2008 – They talked big before the Tug-O-War, flapping their gums and waxing powerful. That’s what the coaches did. Listen to their pride in the video below:

Here’s what really happened. It was over in milliseconds.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXWVe2ngZXI]

Later, the sophomores got off to a good start in the box race. The freshman took the lead and were poised to finish first. Then the errant seniors overcame a wild, out-of-control roll to cross the finish line first!

We’ll have more on the Thunder Games in our next post. Be on the lookout!

FOOTBALL: DeSoto Runs Through Sebring

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

SEBRING, October 25, 2008 – The DeSoto Bulldogs intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown in the first quarter, then blocked and ran their way to more than 200 first half yards enroute to a 48-12 victory over the Sebring Blue Streaks Friday night at Firemen’s Memorial Field.

The loss drops Sebring to 1-6 on the year.

Junior Marcus Shaw proved too much and too fast for Sebring’s struggling defenders, who have been vulnerable to big, fast runners this year.

Many times the Blue Streak defenders were out of position, and even when they weren’t, they were unable to fend off blocks as Shaw sprang to the outside like a gazelle or zig-zagged through the middle like a snake.

To their credit, though, Sebring never gave up, and the players added a fourth-quarter touchdown to remind DeSoto they still had fight in them.

The public address announcers called out all the names of the Sebring cheerleaders, who have done a good job all year, described a terrifice hafltime show by the DeSoto and Sebring bands, and heralded Sara Saenz, whose birthday was the day of the game, proclaiming that she had made the varsity Lady Streaks soccer team.
